What is so special about this warm, soothing, vibrant beverage that has everyone trading in their lattes? …Well we can give you a hint... it’s curcumin!!
Golden milk, also known as haldi doodh in Hindi, is a drink with a lot of history, centuries to be exact. The bright yellow beverage involves plant milk, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and a sweetener such as raw honey or maple syrup. The mixture is heated to provide a warm, soothing drink that boasts a number of health benefits.
Turmeric is an excellent source of curcumin, the compound that gives turmeric its yellow color. Studies have linked curcumin to lower inflammation levels in patients and can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and even cancer.
Curcumin increases levels of many important brain compounds. One such compound is BDNF whose purpose is to help fight degenerative processes in the brain by promoting new neuron growth. With the overall benefit to brain health and reduction of degeneration - some researchers believe curcumin shows potential to reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Research has found that curcumin acts on serotonin levels in the brain to reduce anxiety and improve sleep. - Something to remember for those of you who may struggle with anxiety or poor sleep quality.
Golden milk has also been used in Ayurvedic medicine as a cold remedy because of its anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties.
The trio of warming spices; ginger, cinnamon and turmeric, may protect against heart disease by lowering cholesterol, and reducing triglycerides.
So many good things in such a small cup… brain and memory support, immune support, cholesterol support, reduced inflammation, reduction of anxiety and improved sleep quality?!? We could go on…
